Visitor tip

Cultural notes
This shrine is also associated with the local patron deity, Shinto kami called Toba no Okami, who is revered as the protector of Kobe. In addition to its historical significance, Eight Pillars Shrine is a popular destination for festivals and events throughout the year, including the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.
Historical note
The shrine was founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE) as one of the seven shrines established by Prince Shotoku, a prince who played an important role in introducing Buddhism to Japan.
