Cultural notes

Tsushima Shrine is believed to be dedicated to the kami of the Tsushima Islands, which are said to have been inhabited by the legendary god Susanoo-no-Mikoto. The shrine also hosts a traditional festival called 'Yose no Matsuri' in July, celebrating the legend of Yosa Otsuya, a young woman who became immortal after rescuing a goddess from a dragon.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 1579, but has undergone significant restorations throughout its history. One notable restoration took place during the Meiji period (1868-1912), when the shrine's design was updated to conform to modern standards.
