北野天満宮 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Tenman Okami, the god of learning and education, as well as the patron deity of the city of Echigo. Located in Niigata Prefecture, this shrine was originally built in 1185 during the Kamakura period for the imperial regent Minamoto no Yoritomo. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1664 after a fire. This shrine is notable for its unique architectural style and historical significance as the former residence of the Echigo clan, which ruled the region from the 10th to the 16th centuries.

Visitor tip
Visitors can purchase a special ticket to enter the shrine's museum, which features exhibits on the history of the Echigo clan and the cultural heritage of Niigata Prefecture.
Cultural notes
This shrine is closely associated with the traditional Japanese art of tea ceremony and hosts an annual autumn festival (Koyo Matsuri) in November. The shrine is also home to a large stone statue of Tenman Okami, which is believed to bring good luck for students and scholars.
