Furutogawa Shrine, located in Ibaraki Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of good luck and prosperity, Furutogawa Okami, as well as the Eight Face Kami, a mythological deity believed to bring good fortune and longevity. The shrine's architecture reflects the traditional style of Japanese shrines from the Heian period, with a wooden main hall and earthenware tiled roof. Visitors can participate in the annual Furutogawa Shrine Festival, which takes place on the 15th day of the first month, and enjoy local specialties such as rice balls and sake.

Visitor tip
When visiting the shrine, be sure to ring the large handbell hung outside the main hall to pray for good luck and prosperity.
Cultural notes
As one of the Eight Face Kami shrines, Furutogawa Shrine is believed to have a strong connection to the mythological figure of Hachiman, the god of war. During the festival, visitors can also see the shrine's unique torii gate adorned with eight face-shaped lanterns.

The shrine was built in 1603 during the Edo period.
