Godai-ju Shrine, located in the town of Katsuyama in Shiga Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity Hachiman and also enshrines the god Susanoo. The shrine's name means 'two gods' or 'holy two spirits'. According to legend, the shrine was established by the Emperor of Japan to honor the protection of his ancestors. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical importance as a major stop on the ancient Nakasendo Way.

Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its unique torii gate made of white pine wood, a rare and sacred tree in Shintoism. The shrine also holds an annual festival to celebrate Hachiman's protection, known as the Hachiman Matsuri.
