Located in the town of Awaji, Hyogo Prefecture, Ifukuji Takamatsuhiko-shrines a Shinto shrine dedicated to Takamatsuhiko, the god of the sea and the founder of the city of Awaji. The shrine is famous for its beautiful garden and traditional architecture.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the beauty of the garden, visit during cherry blossom season (March-April) or autumn foliage (November-December).

Cultural notes

This shrine is associated with the legend of Takamatsuhiko, who was said to have built Awaji Island. Visitors can also experience traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and participate in the annual Star Festival (Tanabata) on July 7th.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 1569 by the Shimazu clan.
