八坂神社

Located in the city of Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Eight Slope Shrine is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the protection and good luck of travelers. The shrine's architecture reflects its origins as a road-side temple built during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), with a traditional gabled-roofed main hall. Its current form dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868 CE). Eight Slope Shrine is notable for its unique design, which incorporates eight curved slopes into its grounds, said to symbolize the eight virtues of Shintoism.

Cultural notes

Eight Slope Shrine is famous for its association with the local legend of Mimi no Komachi, a renowned Japanese poet from the Heian period. According to myth, she was said to have prayed at this shrine for inspiration before composing her famous poem, 'The Cherry Blossom's Last Night'.

Established in 718 CE during the Nara period, and rebuilt in 1667 CE after a fire.
