Prayasanjusha Shrine, located in Shiga Prefecture, is dedicated to the worship of Emperor Jinmu, the first emperor of Japan, and his son Emperor Sujin. The shrine is one of the oldest and most important shrines in the country, with a history dating back over 1,300 years. It is also famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture.

Visitor tip
Visit the shrine's main hall to see an impressive example of Heian-period wooden architecture, then take a stroll through the serene gardens which include a teahouse and walking paths along the Katsura River.
Cultural notes
Prayasanjusha Shrine is associated with the mythology of Japan's creation. According to legend, Emperor Jinmu founded the shrine after praying for peace and prosperity at this very site. The shrine also plays an important role in Shiga Prefecture's festivals, including the annual Spring Festival.
