Gion-kuji Shinmokōji Shrine, located in Omi-Hachiman City, Shiga Prefecture, is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the deity of wisdom and prosperity. The shrine's name, Gion-kuji, roughly translates to 'between mountains,' reflecting its unique location within a mountainous region. The site was originally occupied by a 5th-century Buddhist temple, which was later replaced by the current shrine during the Heian period.
