樹下神社

Shiga

Located in the city of Omiya, Shiga Prefecture, Tree Shrine (Kawarimizu), is one of Japan's most famous shrines dedicated to Miko Tsukiyomi, a Shinto deity associated with wisdom and poetry. The shrine is situated on a hilltop overlooking Lake Biwa and is renowned for its unique 'hanging stones' – massive, flat stones suspended above the waters by thin ropes, believed to possess spiritual power.

Cultural notes

As one of Japan's 'Three Great Shrines', Tree Shrine is deeply connected to local folklore and mythology. The annual Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival (Hanami) is particularly vibrant, with thousands of visitors in attendance. Unique architectural features include the 'hanging stones' and intricately designed shrine buildings.

Historical note

Founded in 718 CE during the Asuka period, this shrine has been an important cultural and spiritual center for over 1,300 years.
