大門八幡宮 is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Nojima, Shiga Prefecture, known as Hie Shrine or Hie-jinja in Japanese. Dedicated to the god of war and prosperity, Hachiman, the shrine has played an important role in local politics and military affairs throughout its history. The shrine's architecture is a blend of Heian and Kamakura styles, featuring a wooden torii gate and a large, sacred tree.

Visitor tip
For those visiting during cherry blossom season (late March to early April), take a stroll through the beautiful gardens surrounding the shrine, which feature over 200 cherry blossom trees.
Cultural notes
Hie Shrine is also famous for its unique festival tradition, the Hie Matsuri, which takes place in November and features large-scale performances of traditional music and dance. The shrine's sacred tree, a Japanese cypress called 'Shinmei', is said to have been planted by the god Hachiman himself.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1870 after being destroyed during the Boshin War.
