Located in the town of Sumida, Tochigi Prefecture, Eighteen Stairs Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god Enma, known as Huitetsu no Kami in Japanese. The shrine's main building dates back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE), and its 18 stone stairs are said to symbolize the 18 levels of hell. Visitors can pray for good luck and prosperity at this historic shrine.

Visitor tip
To make an offering, bring a packet of mochi and coins to be placed on the stairs, then perform a small ritual prayer and say 'Huitetsu no Kami ni makoto ni kudasai' (Enma, I pray with sincerity).
Cultural notes
Eighteen Stairs Shrine is closely tied to the mythology surrounding Enma, often depicted as the ruler of the underworld. According to legend, the god's daughter was transformed into a bird and now serves as a messenger between the human world and the afterlife.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after a fire in 1886.
