Anden Shinsha is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Hikone, Shiga Prefecture. Founded in 712, it is one of Japan's oldest shrines and has a rich history dating back to the Nara period. The shrine is known for its beautiful garden and traditional architecture, which reflects the Heian era style. It enshrines the kami Inari Okami and other local deities.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Anden Shinsha is associated with the local legend of the Weeping Woman of Anden, who was said to appear on Mount Anden, weeping for her lost child. The shrine also hosts an annual New Year's festival (Oshogatsu) and a spring festival (Matsuri), which feature traditional dances and offerings to the kami.
Historical note
The shrine was relocated from its original location in Hikone to its current site on Mount Anden in 1560.
