Cultural notes

As a site of great spiritual significance, Mount Zao is believed to be inhabited by numerous kami, including those associated with agriculture and fertility. The shrine is also famous for its unique 'frost festival,' held in February when the surrounding area is blanketed with snow, creating a breathtaking winter wonderland.

The shrine was originally constructed in the Nara period (710-794 CE), with subsequent renovations during the Heian and Kamakura periods
