Located in the scenic Tohoku region, Mutsu no Hachiman-gu is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and patron deity of the Imperial Japanese Army. The shrine's architecture reflects the Heian period style, with a unique curved roofline known as a 'tsukubai'. Visitors can walk through the beautiful gardens and admire the tranquil atmosphere of this sacred site. Mutsu no Hachiman-gu is also famous for its association with the legendary Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a hero of the Genpei War who is said to have sought refuge in the shrine.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the shrine's history and mythology, it is recommended that visitors perform the tsukubai ritual, which involves walking around the base of the main hall three times while purifying themselves with water.

Cultural notes

This shrine is also associated with the legend of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who was said to have been welcomed by Hachiman's kami (spirit) during his stay. The shrine celebrates the annual Mutsu Matsuri festival in September to commemorate this event.
