Located in the city of Sendai, White Mountain Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and patron deity of the Matsushima region. The shrine is situated at the foot of Mount Zao, one of Japan's Three Sacred Mountains. According to legend, the shrine was established by Emperor Choe of the Yamato dynasty in 736 CE, during a time when the Yamato court was facing conflicts with neighboring tribes.

Visitor tip
To make the most of your visit, consider purchasing an All-Day Pass at the shrine's ticket office and use the convenient shuttle bus to access the nearby Mount Zao and nearby Matsushima scenic area. The pass also grants admission to the nearby Kesennuma Museum.

White Mountain Shrine is notable for its unique architecture, which blends traditional Shinto elements with modern designs. The shrine's sacred tree, a 1,000-year-old Japanese larch, is said to be a favorite of Hachiman and is considered a sacred site by locals. Visitors can participate in the annual White Mountain Shrine Festival, which takes place on April 14th, featuring traditional dances, music, and offerings to Hachiman.
