Cultural notes
Miyajima is famous for its association with the legend of Monkey Parker (Sakigake), a mischievous monkey said to be the guardian of the shrine. According to myth, the monkey was banished from the temple grounds by the Buddhist priest who founded the site, but later returned and continued to play tricks on the priests.
Historical note
Founded in the 9th century as a Buddhist temple, Miyajima Shrine was later converted to a Shinto site in the 16th century.
