Located in the Setouchi region of Okayama Prefecture, Oku-no-Mori Shinto Shrine is dedicated to the gods of nature and is particularly revered for its connection to the mythological goddess Okami. The shrine is surrounded by a beautiful forest, which is said to be the dwelling place of the kami. The Enshrinement of the deity Oku no Mori is believed to have taken place in 1183 during the Kamakura Period.

Cultural notes
Oku-no-Mori Shrine is closely associated with the mythological creature Kirihito, which is said to be a giant serpent-like deity that resides in the nearby waters. The shrine's annual New Year's festival (Shingen) celebrates the arrival of spring and the renewal of life.
Historical note
The shrine was originally dedicated to the god of the sea and the protector of fishermen, but later came under the control of the Matsudaira family.
