Kamaksawa Shrine, located in the heart of Mount Kasuga, is one of Japan's most revered Shinto shrines dedicated to the deity of Mt. Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's beauty, visit during cherry blossom season ( late March to early April), and try the local specialty, 'kasuga-gaeshi', a traditional dance performed by male shrine assistants.
Cultural notes
As a Shinto shrine located at the foot of Mt. Kasuga, the site holds significance in Japanese mythology, as it is said that Susanoo no Okami descended upon the mountain and created a spring, giving rise to the local river.
