Located in the city of Omi, Shiga Prefecture, Imari-jinja is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the deities Amaterasu Ōmikami and Takehito-hime-no-Ōkami. Founded in 656 AD, it is one of the oldest shrines in Japan. The shrine's architecture reflects the traditional Heian period style, with an impressive main hall called the Denba-chaya and a sacred pond reflecting the beauty of nature.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Imari-jinja is closely associated with the legend of Omi-no-mikoto, a legendary emperor who ruled the region. The shrine also holds an annual festival called Omisoka no Matsuri in December, which features traditional performances and offerings to honor the deities.
