Tottori

Nakatani Shrine, located in the town of Toyooka, Tottori Prefecture, is dedicated to the Shinto deity Nakatani-hime. The shrine is famous for its beautiful autumn foliage and traditional architecture. In the Edo period, the shrine was renovated and expanded by the Tokugawa shogunate, adding a distinctive curved roof style known as 'karahafu' to its design.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Nakatani Shrine is associated with the legend of Nakatani-hime, a young woman who was said to have been transformed into a deer by the kami. The shrine is also famous for its 'hagimaro' tradition, where devotees dress in white and offer prayers at the shrine during autumn.
