Shiga

Toda Shrine, located in Omi-Hachiman city of Shiga Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of rice and fertility, and is also revered as a symbol of good luck and prosperity. The shrine's main hall, Honden, features a unique thatched roof design typical of the Kofuku-zukuri style, which was popular during the Heian period.

Visitor tip

To make an offering at the shrine, bring a small amount of Japanese rice, which is traditionally used to pray for good harvests and fertility.

Cultural notes

Toda Shrine is famous for its New Year's (Oshogatsu) festival, during which devotees offer mochi and sake to the god of rice. The shrine is also said to be the place where the legendary 'rice ball' was invented.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1687 after being destroyed by fire.
