Located in Chiba Prefecture, 飛鳥宮 (Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu) is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of war and justice, Hachiman. The shrine was founded during the Edo period and is known for its well-preserved traditional architecture and beautiful gardens. Cultural notes
As a shrine dedicated to Hachiman, Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu is closely associated with the mythology of the god who descended from the heavens in a bird (tsuru) and was recognized as a hero by the people. The shrine also hosts the annual Hachiman Matsuri festival in May.
Historical note
The shrine was built in 1625 as a shrine of the Matsumae clan.
