Horiyoshi-jinja is a Shinto shrine in Niigata Prefecture, dedicated to the worship of Hachiman-gu, the deity of war and patron of the Horiyoshi clan who ruled the region from the 14th century. The shrine's current main hall was rebuilt in 1696, but the temple complex dates back to the Heian period (794-1185). The shrine is known for its stunning autumn foliage and traditional Japanese architecture.

Visitor tip
For a truly immersive experience, arrive at dawn to watch the shrine's lanterns being lit and then participate in the morning prayer ceremony.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its 'Furinji-gusa' festival, which takes place in June. During this festival, visitors can enjoy traditional dance performances, games, and food stalls, as well as witness a ritual purification of the shrines.
Historical note
The shrine was founded by Horiyoshi Sadatane, who built the temple complex during the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
