Rivera Shrine, located in the city of Maibara in Shiga Prefecture, is a sacred Shinto site dedicated to the protection and prosperity of the nearby Hōki River. Cultural notes
Rivera Shrine is connected to the mythology of the Hōki River, which is said to be inhabited by the kami Okuninushi. During the spring festival, known as Hōketsu Matsuri, locals offer food and drink to the kami and hold games and activities along the riverbank.
Historical note
Founded in 747 CE as a shrine to the kami Okuninushi, Rivera Shrine was an important center for the worship of rice goddesses during the Heian period.
