Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Onezone Shrine is associated with the mythological figure of Urashima Taro, a fisherman who was turned into a turtle by the Ocean Goddess and spent three years in her underwater palace. Locals celebrate this legend during the annual Urashima Taro Festival (mid-July).

Historical note

The shrine was originally founded in 1873 by the Tokunoshima family, who brought with them their ancestral deity, and has since undergone several renovations to incorporate modern facilities while maintaining its traditional charm.
