Cultural notes
Koya-san Shinshu is known for its unique festival, called the 'Shinshu Matsuri', which takes place in late summer. The shrine also has strong connections to Buddhism, with many Buddhist artifacts and relics on display. Locals believe that the shrine's torii gate can ward off evil spirits.
Historical note
The shrine was built during the Edo period (1603-1867) and is believed to have originated from a local deity worshipped by the indigenous Ainu people.
