Cultural notes

Daio Shrine is closely associated with the legend of a fisherman who prayed to the god of the ocean for success. In return, the god granted him a long life and good health. The shrine's architecture reflects this myth, with many buildings designed to resemble boats or fishermen's huts.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 734 CE as a temple dedicated to Buddhist deities, but was later converted to Shintoism during the Heian period.
