Located in the heart of Kobe, Japan's third-largest city, Eight Horses Shrine is one of the most famous Shinto shrines in the Hyogo prefecture. Dedicated to the deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the primary enshrined kami is believed to have a significant influence over fishing and navigation. Visitor tip
To experience the shrine at its best, visit during the annual Setsubun festival, where locals throw soybeans to ward off evil spirits.
Cultural notes
As a major Shinto site, Eight Horses Shrine is connected to the mythology of Susanoo-no-Mikoto's battle with the goddess Amaterasu. During Setsubun, visitors can also enjoy traditional foods such as makizushi (sushi rolls) and herring sashimi.
