厳島神社

Saitama

厳島神社 is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Higashimatsuoka, Saitama Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the kami Inazuma-no-kami, known as the 'God of Lightning'. According to legend, Inazuma-no-kami appeared to the local lord, Sakamoto Norifusa, and helped him defeat a rival clan. As a result, the lord built the shrine in gratitude, which has been standing since 1590.

Cultural notes

厳島神社 is famous for its annual 'Obon Festival', where visitors can pray for good luck and fertility. The shrine's unique architectural style is influenced by the Momoyama period (1573-1615), which featured a large torii gate and wooden buildings. Inazuma-no-kami is also associated with protection from lightning and storms.
