Located on the island of Ōshima in Miyagi Prefecture, Kagishima Shrine is dedicated to Inari Okami, the Shinto god of rice, fertility, and prosperity. The shrine's current structure dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867), but it is believed that the original shrine was founded during the Heian period (794-1185). Visitors can explore the shrine's serene gardens and traditional architecture, including the torii gate adorned with sacred trees.

To respect the shrine's peaceful atmosphere, visitors are advised to remove their shoes before entering the main hall and to refrain from taking photographs during the morning prayer services.
Cultural notes
Inari Okami is often depicted with multiple hands, each holding a rice ball. At Kagishima Shrine, devotees offer food, especially mochi and sake, to Inari Okami as a symbol of gratitude for bountiful harvests. During the spring festival (known as Matsuri), participants carry large mochi balls from the shrine to the nearby Ōshima town, reenacting an ancient ritual.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after being damaged in a tsunami in 1896.
