小塚山神社 is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Kesennuma, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. The shrine is dedicated to Tsukuyomi-no-Kami, one of the five imperial deities and the god of the moon. According to legend, Tsukuyomi-no-Kami was impressed by the beauty of a local maiden who lived in the area, and he chose her as his favorite concubine.

Visitor tip
Visitors can purchase a charm called 'tsukuyomi no ki' at the shrine shop, which is said to bring good luck and protection from evil spirits.
Cultural notes
Tsukuyomi-no-Kami is often associated with the changing of the seasons, particularly the full moon. The shrine's annual Moon Viewing Festival ( Tsukimi Matsuri) takes place in November, where locals gather to admire the beauty of the full moon and offer prayers for good fortune.
Historical note
The shrine is believed to have been founded in the 8th century, during the Nara period. It has undergone several renovations and expansions throughout its history.
