Visitor tip
To avoid long lines, consider visiting the shrine early in the morning or later in the evening, when the sunlight filters through the vermilion torii gates and illuminates the tranquil grounds.
Cultural notes
As a Shinto shrine deeply connected to education and literacy, Tenjin Shrine plays an important role in Japan's literary history. The shrine is also associated with the myth of Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess who is said to have descended from heaven to reveal herself to Susanowo-no-mikoto.
Historical note
The shrine was founded in 745 AD by Emperor Junianagi to appease Susanowo-no-mikoto.
