八幡宮

Ibaraki

Eight Humps Shrine, located in the town of Hitachi in Ibaraki Prefecture, is dedicated to the god Susanoo no Mikoto and the sea goddess Amaterasu Omikami. The shrine's architecture reflects its historic ties to the Utsunomiya clan, a powerful daimyo family that once ruled over the area. The shrine's 13th-century main hall, Kondō, is one of Japan's oldest and most well-preserved wooden structures. Eight Humps Shrine is also known for its beautiful gardens and traditional festivals, which take place throughout the year.

Cultural notes

Eight Humps Shrine is said to be associated with the legend of Susanoo no Mikoto, who was responsible for creating the ocean's waves. The shrine's name, 'hachimantō,' refers to the eight humps or 'hachi' that are said to be located in the nearby sea.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1710 after a fire destroyed the original structure.
