Miyagi

Located in the town of Tsugaru in Miyagi Prefecture, Sainehimegusonju Shrine is dedicated to the kami Sakahikoma and is known for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture. The shrine is believed to have been founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), making it one of the oldest shrines in the region. Visitors can explore the serene grounds, which feature a tranquil pond, walking paths, and historic buildings.

Cultural notes

Sainehimegusonju Shrine is associated with Sakahikoma, the kami of fishermen and sailors. The shrine also has connections to local legend, in which Sakahikoma was said to have saved the town from a great storm by creating a calm sea.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1871 during the Meiji period's modernization efforts.
