Cultural notes
Tenjin shrines are particularly popular among students and parents seeking divine assistance with education. Plum blossoms are closely associated with Sugawara no Michizane and often planted at Tenjin shrines, as he was said to love them deeply.
Historical note
Like other Tenjin shrines throughout Japan, this shrine was established to venerate Sugawara no Michizane (845-903), who was posthumously deified as Tenjin after his political exile and death. Tenjin worship spread across Japan during the Heian period as communities sought to appease his spirit and gain his blessing for scholarly pursuits.
