Cultural notes

This shrine complex is closely associated with the legend of the ' twelve gods', who were said to have descended from heaven to bring light to the world. The shrine also hosts a festival to celebrate the arrival of spring, known as 'Hanami' in Japanese culture.

Historical note

Founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), it was originally a humble shrine dedicated to the god Susanoo.
