Located in the town of Naka, on the shores of Lake Biwa, Asahi no Soko Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami Inari and Hachiman. The shrine is situated near the famous Asahi River, which flows into Lake Biwa and is said to be the site where the sun god Amaterasu descended to earth. Cultural notes
Asashi no Soko Shrine is celebrated during the summer months for its Hachiyoubi Matsuri, a nine-day festival honoring Hachiman. The shrine's unique architectural feature is its large torii gate, which is adorned with prayer offerings from devotees. Inari is also enshrined here, and visitors can explore the shrine's many fox statues, believed to be messengers of Inari.
Historical note
The shrine was originally established in the Nara period (794-1185 CE), but its current structure dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867 CE).
