八幡神社

Located in the town of Hitachi, Ibaraki Prefecture, Eighteen Hara Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Fujin, the wind god, and Raijin, the thunder god. The shrine is famous for its distinctive double gate structure, known as yagura, which features two concentric gates with different types of roof tiles. This unique architectural feature is said to represent the balance between good fortune and misfortune. Visitors can explore the shrine's grounds, including a beautiful garden and a pond with a statue of Fujin riding a giant bird.

Visitor tip

To avoid getting blown away by the wind, visit the shrine early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is not too high.

Cultural notes

As a shrine dedicated to Fujin, Eighteen Hara Shrine is often visited during the annual Wind Festival (Koyō Matsuri), which takes place in April. The festival features traditional wind-powered lanterns and performances.

Founded in the 8th century, the shrine was rebuilt several times due to natural disasters and fires over the centuries.
