Reshujingū Shrine, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Ōmikami, is located in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture. The shrine's main hall, Haiden, features a distinctive curved roof and is adorned with traditional Shinto decorations. The shrine complex also includes several smaller shrines and a sacred pond.

Visitor tip
To avoid heat exhaustion, it's recommended to visit the shrine early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the sun is not directly overhead.
Cultural notes
Reshujingū Shrine is famous for its traditional festival, Tenjin Matsuri, which honors the god of learning and wisdom, Susanoo no Kami. During this festival, lanterns are displayed along the nearby Hoshizuka River, symbolizing the god's protection.
Historical note
The shrine was founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE) and is one of the oldest in Japan.
