Located in the Aomori Prefecture, not Iwate, the Tenjin Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of learning and culture, Sugawara no Michizane. The shrine is famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture, which reflect the Kamakura period style.

Visitor tip
For a unique experience, visit the shrine at sunset to witness the traditional lantern-lighting ceremony, which takes place every evening from April to October.
Cultural notes
In Aomori Prefecture, the Tenjin Shrine is closely associated with the traditional Aomori folk dance, 'Aomori Odori', which is performed annually during the Aomori Nebuta House Festival. The shrine is also famous for its beautiful gardens, which are inspired by traditional Japanese landscape design.
