Located in the heart of Yamagata Prefecture, Takayama Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto deity Inari Okami, patron of rice, fertility, and industry. Visitor tip
Visit the shrine's many fox statues, known as kitsune, which are said to bring good luck. To do so, gently bow and make an offering of mochi or other treats.
Cultural notes
Takayama Shrine is particularly famous for its association with the legend of Okuni San, a 17th-century folk performer who was said to have been a priestess of the shrine. According to legend, Okuni San's performances at the shrine were so mesmerizing that they helped to bring peace to Japan.
Historical note
The shrine was founded in the 9th century during the Nara period and has undergone several renovations since then, including a major reconstruction in the Edo period.
