Cultural notes
Nyonosekiji Shrine is famous for its association with Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a storm god and brother of Amaterasu-no-Mikoto. The shrine's annual Summer Solstice Festival, also known as Nyonoseki no Matsuri, features traditional dances, food stalls, and games.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built as a memorial to a local warlord who died in battle in 720 AD.
