Rinno-ji Temple, located in the city of Yamagata, is dedicated to the Shinto god of wealth and prosperity, Rinnō, as well as the god of good fortune and longevity, Fūjin's sister, Toho-no-Okami. The shrine is situated on a scenic hill overlooking the Yamagata Plain and features traditional Japanese architecture with multiple shrines and halls. Visitor tip
To experience the best of the shrine's autumn foliage, visit in early November and walk along the winding path leading to the main hall, taking care not to disturb the ancestral trees and shrines along the way.
Cultural notes
Rinno-ji Temple is closely tied to the mythology surrounding Fūjin and Toho-no-Okami, who are believed to have created the Yamagata Plain through their divine powers. The shrine also celebrates the annual Rinno-ji Festival in April, featuring traditional dances and performances.
