Hachimontetsugu Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the valley of Yakumo River, Yamagata Prefecture. Dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and protection, the shrine is renowned for its beautiful architecture and rich history dating back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE). The shrine's main hall, dedicated to Hachiman, features a unique vermilion roof and wooden beam structure characteristic of traditional Japanese architecture. Visitors can explore the serene gardens, which are said to be a favorite haunt of the god Hachiman himself.

Visitor tip
When visiting the shrine, be sure to ring the large bronze bell located on the right-hand side of the main hall, as this is said to have been a favorite pastime of Hachiman.
Cultural notes
Hachimontetsugu Shrine is closely associated with the Yamagata region's folklore and mythology. According to local legend, the shrine's location was chosen because it corresponds to the direction from which Hachiman is said to have descended upon the earth. The shrine also hosts an annual Hachiman Matsuri festival in late September, which features processions, music, and traditional dances.
Historical note
The shrine was originally established in 1197 CE by Yoritsune Minamoto during the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE).
