Located in the foothills of Mt. Fuji, Sukayu Jinja is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the gods of rice and fertility. As one of the oldest shrines in Yamanashi Prefecture, it has played an important role in the region's agricultural history. Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's beauty, visitors are encouraged to approach the main hall from the east side, where they will find the sacred tree and the entrance to the inner shrine. Be sure to wash your hands before entering the shrine grounds.
Cultural notes
Sukayu Jinja is famous for its association with the rice goddess Mikasa, as well as Inari Okami, a deity revered for good harvests and prosperity. The shrine also holds an annual festival in June, where visitors can participate in traditional games and dances.
Historical note
Founded during the Nara period (712-794 CE), Sukayu Jinja is believed to have originated as a humble torii gate dedicated to the rice goddess, Mikasa.
