Iwate

Miyajima Shrine, located in Iwate Prefecture, is one of the most famous Shinto shrines in Japan. Dedicated to the god Inari Okami, it is renowned for its beautiful architecture and serene surroundings. The shrine was originally constructed on Miyajima Island but has since moved to a location on the mainland due to erosion. Visitors can still see the remains of the original temple on the island.

Visitor tip

To avoid the crowds, visit during the early morning or late afternoon when taking a boat ride around Miyajima Island and approaching the shrine.

Cultural notes

Inari Okami is revered as the god of rice, fertility, and industry. The shrine is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, which are believed to symbolize the connection between heaven and earth. During New Year's (Oshogatsu), visitors often tie pink or white ribbons around the gates.

Historical note

The current main hall dates back to the Meiji period (1868-1912).
