Cultural notes

In addition to its role as a Shinto shrine, Eight Horses Shrine is also known for its association with the legend of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a famous samurai who lived in the region during the Kamakura period. According to legend, Yoshitsune prayed at this very shrine before his death.

Historical note

The shrine was originally founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) as a humble temple dedicated to Hachiman Tenjin. It later evolved into its current form during the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE).
