KoRakuji Shrine, located in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, is the sacred site of the great earthquake of 869 AD and the largest Shinto shrine in Japan by floor area. Dedicated to KoRaku, a kami believed to be the spirit of Mt. KoRaku, a volcano on the island of Honshu. The shrine's traditional architecture reflects its historic importance as a refuge for locals fleeing volcanic eruptions.

Visitor tip

Visit the shrine's peaceful grounds during cherry blossom season ( late March to early April) and enjoy the stunning display of some of Japan's most beautiful flowers.

Cultural notes

KoRakuji is known for its unique 'haiden' (main hall) structure, which features a distinctive curved roof. The shrine also holds an annual festival called 'Naginata- Matsuri,' where participants reenact the legend of KoRaku's defeat of the volcano with his naginata (a type of polearm).
