Hakosan-taisha is a Shinto shrine located in Higashi-Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, which was once the site of an ancient Heian-period (794-1185) temple dedicated to Amaterasu. Today, it is one of Japan's most famous and sacred shrines, housing various deities including Hakosan, a regional kami believed to reside in the mountainous regions. The shrine complex features a large torii gate, numerous temples and shrines, and a beautiful vermilion torii gate known as 'The Red Gate of Heaven.'
